Livestock Nutrition Consulting

Nutrition That Supports Herd Health and Production

Livestock require the right balance of energy, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals to perform at their best. When these nutrients are out of balance, the results show up quickly: poor weight gain, decreased milk production, fertility issues or weakened immunity. Our nutrition team evaluates the full picture of your operation—including forage quality, current feed choices, mineral programs and animal condition—to help you build a feeding strategy that works for both your animals and your bottom line.

A strong nutrition plan helps you:

  • Improve average daily gain and feed conversion efficiency
  • Support reproductive performance and healthier offspring
  • Maintain consistent body condition through seasonal changes
  • Maximize the value of homegrown forages
  • Reduce unnecessary supplement costs and avoid overfeeding
  • Strengthen herd resilience and productivity

Our recommendations are grounded in practical field experience and current livestock nutrition research.

On-Farm Expertise You Can Trust

Our livestock specialists provide on-farm or phone consultations designed to fit the needs of both large and small operations. During a visit, we assess body condition, herd uniformity, forage availability, mineral access, water sources and overall management. We take the time to understand your production goals before offering targeted recommendations.

Our consulting services include:

  • Custom feeding programs for beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and specialty livestock
  • Hay and forage testing to identify nutrient gaps
  • Mineral and vitamin program evaluation and design
  • Rations for breeding animals, growing stock, show animals and finishing programs
  • Seasonal feeding strategies to maintain performance year-round

A Practical, Whole-Herd Approach

Livestock nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. We build programs that consider pasture management, forage cycles, herd size, labor, feed availability and long-term operational goals. Our mission is to help your animals perform better, stay healthier and convert feed more efficiently, all while supporting the sustainability of your operation.

Karen Holloway

Livestock Specialist

As Sales and Product Manager for The Mill’s Show Feeds, Livestock, and Poultry division, I work closely with customers and our retail team to ensure we deliver the right products and support, all with a focus on providing the best possible customer experience. Whether it’s helping a show family fine-tune their feeding program or supporting commercial and hobby farmers with feed, fencing, and livestock equipment, I’m passionate about connecting people with the tools they need to succeed.

I was raised on my family’s livestock, grain, and hay farm in Darlington, Maryland, where my love for agriculture, especially the animal side, took root early. That passion led me to earn animal science degrees from Virginia Tech and the University of Georgia, and to serve as an Agricultural Extension Agent in both Maryland and Virginia before joining The Mill.

In addition to my role here, I’m actively involved in supporting youth and agriculture through volunteer work. I serve as a long-time 4-H volunteer in Harford County and with the Maryland 4-H livestock programs, and I’m proud to serve on the Maryland State Fair Board, where I act as 4-H Beef Superintendent and Chair of the Agriculture Committee.

When I’m not at The Mill or involved in community events, I enjoy time at home on the family farm, relaxing with friends and family, hanging out with my dog, or unwinding with a good book or some music.

Nathan Holloway

Director of Retail

As the Director of Retail Operations at The Mill, I have the privilege of working alongside our dedicated retail teams to ensure every customer receives exceptional service, expert guidance, and the right solutions for their needs. My role is all about helping our locations operate smoothly and consistently, while continuously improving how we serve our farm and home communities.

I was raised on a farm in Darlington, Maryland, where I developed a deep appreciation for agriculture and the hard work that goes into it. That background, paired with my degree in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University, gave me a strong foundation in both the practical and business sides of the industry. Whether it's helping a young showman earn a championship banner at the Maryland State Fair or making sure a homeowner gets the lush, healthy lawn they’ve been working toward, I find great purpose in helping others reach their goals.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, our dog, and our extended family on the farm. I also like to unwind by hunting, fishing, or squeezing in a good game of pickleball with friends.

At The Mill, we don’t just sell products — we build relationships and support our communities. I’m proud to be part of a team that’s passionate about what we do, and I look forward to helping you in any way I can.
