Winter Wren - January 2025 Bird of the Month

The Winter Wren is a charming tiny bird that is often seen flitting through dense undergrowth and wooded areas.  Despite its small size, this bird is recognized by its distinctively short, upright tail heavily streaked brown plumage which provides excellent camouflage against its surroundings. What truly sets the Winter Wren apart is its remarkable song—a surprisingly complex and melodious series of trills and whistles.

In winter, these wrens can often be seen foraging in brush piles or among fallen logs, searching for insects and spiders. During migration, they travel from their breeding grounds in the northern forests of Canada and the northeastern U.S. to their wintering habitats in the southeastern U.S. and along the West Coast.

Though shy and often elusive, Winter Wrens are quite active. You might spot one darting close to the ground or hopping along with quick, jerky movements as they explore their environment. Their energetic

behavior and enchanting song make them a delightful addition to any birdwatcher's winter observations.
