July 2025 Featured Bird - The Blackpoll Warbler
The Blackpoll Warbler is a small songbird renowned for completing one of the longest migratory journeys of any North American warbler. Each spring, it nests in the boreal forests of Canada and parts of Alaska, where it prefers dense stands of spruce and fir. There, it builds a neat, cup-shaped nest low in the branches and typically raises a single brood each year.
Come fall, this remarkable bird undertakes an astonishing nonstop transoceanic flight—traveling from the northeastern United States all the way to South America. This journey spans up to 2,000 miles and can take as long as three days without rest, making it one of the most impressive feats of endurance in the avian world.
During migration, Blackpoll Warblers can be found in a wide range of habitats, from quiet woodlots and coastal thickets to city parks and urban green spaces. Despite their small size, they are a testament to the strength, adaptability, and mystery of migratory birds.
