Feeding for the Show Ring Starts Now
For 4-H and FFA exhibitors, April marks a critical point in the show season calendar. Projects are hitting the final homes, growing rapidly, jackpot shows are right around the corner, and the feeding decisions made right now will directly shape how a pig looks and performs when it steps into the ring.
Feeding show pigs is not simply about putting weight on them. It requires a clear understanding of where each hog is in its development, what the judge will be looking for on show day, and how to use nutrition to close the gap between where the pig is and where it needs to be. Getting that right takes consistency, the right products, and a feeding plan built around the individual animal.
Understanding the Growth Cycle
In the show feed world, we talk a lot about pigs and their maturity curve and hitting 12 o’clock. This is a term used by many to talk about timing a pig so that we’re showing it when it’s at it’s peak or the best it will ever be. One of the most challenging things we come across when feeding pigs is when a pig hits it’s peak too early and we have to control or maintain it throughout that period. All of this comes back to managing a pigs maturity curve.
When we talk about the maturity curve on pigs, we’re talking about managing their growth throughout the growth period so they grow consistently and change the way we want them to. We don’t want to grow one too fast or too slow. Being able to read a pig to understand how green it is, helps us determine how much more we need to feed or push.
Our end goal show truly determines how we’re going to push one. If our end goal show is the county or state fair, we can grow a pig moderately with minimal supplements. Throughout the entire period, we may be changing the base feed depending on condition, appetite, and muscle expression, but we will typically refrain from supplement use. We need the pig to be a pig so it can grow normal without issues, then 45-60 days out of our show, we will start introducing supplements to tweak and change the look of the pig. Whether it’s building a bigger, firmer top, adding muscle expression, adding cover, sharpening them up, or improving hair coat, there is a lot we can do with supplements to tweak a pig.
If we plan to use the pig throughout the jackpot circuit, we will feed the hog very differently. Those hogs need to be on the verge of their peak from the first show in the beginning of May through the end of June. It is a balancing act that all feeders must work through because that pig is getting pushed, experiencing many different environments, getting sick, going off feed routinely, and many other stressors that come with going to 4-8 jackpot shows in the spring. We ramp these pigs up every weekend to then turn around and mellow them out for a couple of days, then do it all again. Pushing them that hard and adding all the stress from jackpot shows can make it very difficult to keep one from plateauing and getting stale. With the right supplements, and understanding of pig's maturity curve, we can help manage that.
Most feeding programs are one or the other of these two plans. It can be very hard to do both but it can certainly be done with the right pigs. At the end of the day, it comes back to managing pigs based on the purpose, and having the right plan to get there.

Breeder #7 is often used on gilts to get them where we want them.
Sunglo Game On is one of the most versatile supplements in the show pig arsenal. There is truly nothing like it on the market to build a big, wide top in a show pig.
Sunglo S'more Fill is a highly palatable, rolled oat-based supplement that works across species and excels at improving appetite and body fill. For pigs that are finicky eaters or need to be pushed through the final stretch, it is a reliable tool in the program. Where S’more Fill shines is on show day to get pigs to eat and add fill for the true show ring look.

Sunglo 4-Sure is an electrolyte supplements used before and during shows to keep hogs hydrated and looking fresh for the show ring.
Building a Consistent Feeding Program
Regardless of the species or products being used, consistency is the foundation of any successful show feeding program. Animals that experience frequent ration changes, irregular feeding schedules, or inconsistent intake tend to show it in their performance.
A few principles that experienced showmen apply throughout the season:
- Feed on a schedule. Animals thrive on routine. Feeding at the same times each day improves intake consistency and reduces digestive stress.
- Weigh animals regularly. Tracking weight on a weekly basis allows exhibitors to monitoraverage daily gain and adjust rations before problems develop.
- Adjust based on the animal, not just the calendar. Body condition, maturity, and genetic type all influence how a feeding program should be managed. Not every animal responds the same way to the same ration.
- Transition rations gradually. When shifting from a growth ration to a finishing supplement, make changes over 7 to 10 days to avoid disrupting intake or digestive function.
- Monitor behavior. Clean feeders suggest the animal could handle more. Consistent leftover feed signals an intake issue that needs to be addressed.
