Tar spot, which had been identified as an early concern in late June before the extreme heat of early July suppressed it, is no longer the concern it appeared to be heading into the summer. The triple-digit temperatures around Independence Day did exactly what the research suggested they would: effectively shut down tar spot development across the community. Ben has been reporting that outcome for several weeks now, and the fields are confirming it.
Gray leaf spot, however, did not stop. It never does in this community. Ben noted that gray leaf spot has been a persistent presence in Whitehall area corn fields throughout his entire career as a Certified Crop Advisor, and this year is no exception. The disease is now visibly active across the corn crop, and Ben described what growers should be looking for when scouting their own fields.
How to Identify Gray Leaf Spot in the Field
Ben offered a clear field identification description for growers who may not have encountered gray leaf spot before or who want to confirm what they are seeing in their own corn. The lesions are miniature and rectangular-shaped, appearing between the ribs of the corn leaf. As the disease progresses, those lesions turn brown and create the characteristic rectangular pattern bounded by the leaf veins that makes gray leaf spot recognizable once a grower knows what to look for.

The lesions can appear faint and easy to overlook on a quick walk-through, particularly in the lower canopy where the disease typically starts. Ben encouraged growers to get into their fields and look closely rather than making assessments from the field edge. By the time gray leaf spot is clearly visible from a distance, it has usually been developing in the canopy for some time.
What Gray Leaf Spot Means for Yield
Ben was measured and honest about the yield impact of gray leaf spot at this stage of the season. It is not the catastrophic threat that severe tar spot can represent. He was clear that gray leaf spot is not going to cut yield in half for fields that did not receive a fungicide application.
What it will do is have a measurable, real impact on yield for untreated acres. Gray leaf spot reduces the photosynthetic capacity of affected leaves by destroying leaf tissue. During grain fill, when the corn plant is drawing on every available green leaf to convert sunlight into starch and fill kernels, any reduction in canopy health translates directly into yield. The severity of that reduction depends on how much of the canopy is affected and how far into grain fill the disease has progressed before conditions change.
For growers who chose not to apply fungicide this season, gray leaf spot is the reminder that the decision carries consequences that are now showing up in the field.
Fungicide-Treated Acres Are Proving the Investment
For growers who did spend the money on aerial fungicide applications at tasseling, whether by helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft, or drone, this week's update from Ben validates that decision clearly.
The critical point Ben made is that fungicide timing at tasseling does not target what a grower can already see. Visible gray leaf spot lesions at that point are typically confined to the lower canopy and appear minor. The fungicide application at tasseling is made based on what disease risk models are predicting will happen over the following three to six weeks, not in response to obvious symptoms already present.
Growers who trusted those models and applied fungicide at the right time are now looking at canopies that have meaningfully less disease pressure than untreated fields. The investment was not made against something visible at the time. It was made against the probability of what was coming. That probability played out exactly as the models suggested it would, and the fields treated during the tasseling window are in better shape heading into the final weeks of grain fill as a result.
Rain Is Coming and the Season Is Heading Toward the Finish Line
