The update Ben delivered this week is one of the most instructive of the entire 2026 season, not because the news is uniformly good, but because the ears he husked back in the field told a specific and honest story about what this growing season did to the crop and when it did it.

August Kept Delivering Rain

Before getting to the field observations, Ben noted that August continued its remarkable contribution to the 2026 rainfall totals. Another half inch to an inch of rain fell across the region over the weekend, depending on location, extending a stretch that Ben and the host have been describing for several weeks as an amazing August blessing.

The contrast with June and July could not be sharper. Those months were defined by dry conditions and the compounding stress of drought during tasseling and pollination. August arrived and changed the equation entirely, delivering consistent moisture that has supported grain fill in corn and dramatically improved prospects for double crop soybeans. For growers who needed rain in July and did not get it, August's rainfall was welcome but arrived too late to undo what the drought had already done to yield potential.

How Corn Dries Down: A Field Explanation

Ben used this week's report to walk through the corn drying-down process in a way that is worth understanding for any grower or grain marketing decision-maker watching the crop approach harvest maturity.

Moisture leaves the corn kernel not by evaporating directly from the husk or the kernel surface alone, but by traveling from the kernels outward through the husk leaves that wrap the ear and then evaporating into the surrounding air. The leaves of the husk function as the primary moisture exit pathway from the grain.

That detail is directly connected to one of the most consistent agronomic investments Ben has discussed throughout this season: fungicide applications at tasseling. Keeping the corn plant's leaf tissue healthy, green, and functional as long as possible through grain fill serves a dual purpose. It maximizes photosynthesis for grain fill and it maintains the integrity of the husk tissue that the drying-down process depends on. Diseased or dead husk leaves impair the natural field drying process, leaving grain wetter and creating the potential for mold and mycotoxin issues in the ear before harvest.

It is a connection between summer disease management and fall harvest quality that does not always get made explicitly, and Ben made it clearly this week.

The Ears Are Telling a Story About June

When Ben husked back ears in the field on Monday morning, what he found confirmed both the good news and the limiting factor of the 2026 corn season in this footprint.

The good news: 16 to 18 rows of kernels around each ear, which Ben described as great. Row number is set during the V6 growth stage when the corn plant is approximately knee-high. May and early June delivered adequate moisture during that window, giving the crop the environmental conditions it needed to set a strong row count. That early-season moisture investment is showing up in the husked ear as a well-developed circumference.

The limiting factor: kernel count along the ear is running approximately 38 to 40 kernels long, well short of the 60-plus kernels per row that an ear in an ideal moisture environment would carry. Ben connected that number directly and specifically to the drought that arrived right around V6 and extended through June and into July.

The field Ben was standing in produced an ear with excellent width but below-potential length. That is precisely what early-season moisture followed by summer drought looks like in the husked ear at the end of August.

A Quarter Mile Away Tells a Different Story

One of the most practically useful observations Ben made this week is a reminder that yield variability within a single farming operation, and even within a single neighborhood, can be dramatic when drought stress is the primary limiting factor.

Ben noted that a field located a quarter mile from where he was reporting could be telling an entirely different story. Rainfall in the summer months, particularly localized thunderstorm events, can be highly variable across short distances. A field that received an inch from a storm that dropped only a quarter inch a mile away will show meaningfully different kernel counts, ear size, and ultimately yield at harvest.

It is a caution against drawing firm conclusions about yield from any single field observation and a reminder that the combine is always the final authority on what a season actually produced.

Field Days Are Worth Attending: A Word From the White Post

Ben noted during the segment that he happened to be standing next to a white field trial post, the kind that marks hybrid or product placement strips in a comparison trial. He used the moment to encourage growers to sign up for summer field days, with one happening that very Wednesday.

His reasoning was straightforward and earned from experience: there is always something to learn in a field trial, always a hybrid comparison or product observation that shifts how a grower thinks about next season's decisions. And then he delivered a line worth carrying into every management conversation: the day a farm stops learning is probably the day it starts declining.

That mindset, honest assessment of what the season produced and why, combined with curiosity about what to do differently next time, is what separates good agronomic management from comfortable habits.

What the 2026 Corn Crop Looks Like at the Finish Line

The 2026 corn crop in the Whitehall, Maryland community is approaching harvest with a mixed but ultimately resilient story. A difficult spring with limited field access, a drought that arrived during tasseling and the critical pollination window, gray leaf spot pressure that showed up in untreated fields, and a late-summer rainfall recovery that arrived in time to support grain fill but too late to add kernel count.
