Chickens and Molting: What Every Flock Owner Should Know

Chickens and Molting: What Every Flock Owner Should Know

If you’ve ever asked yourself “why is my chicken losing feathers?, chances are you’re witnessing a molt. Molting is a natural, seasonal process where chickens shed old feathers and grow new ones. While it may look alarming, it’s an important part of keeping your flock healthy and productive. Let’s explore when chickens molt, how long molting lasts in chickens and the best way to support your birds through this critical stage."

When Do Chickens Molt?

Most chickens experience their first full molt between 15–18 months of age, then repeat the cycle once a year. Molting is triggered primarily by shorter daylight hours in the fall, though stress, illness, or sudden environmental changes can also bring on an unexpected molt.

During this time, hens will often reduce or completely stop egg production as their bodies redirect energy from laying into growing new feathers.

How Long Does Molting Last in Chickens?

Molting isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. On average, it lasts 7–8 weeks, but some birds may finish in as little as 4 weeks, while others take 12 weeks or more.

  • Soft molt: gradual feather loss over a longer period.

  • Hard molt: rapid feather loss all at once, which may leave hens looking patchy or bare but often results in faster regrowth.

Why Is My Chicken Losing Feathers?

Feather loss doesn’t always mean molting. Here are common causes to consider:

  • Natural molt – symmetrical feather loss, new “pin feathers” emerging, and reduced egg laying.

  • Parasites – feather loss around the vent or under the wings, combined with itching or skin irritation.

  • Nutritional deficiencies – dull, brittle feathers or slow regrowth.

  • Stress – extreme weather, overcrowding, or predator pressure can lead to feather damage.

If your flock shows other signs of distress or patchy feather loss outside of molting season, it’s worth ruling out mites, lice, or nutritional imbalances.

Helping Chickens Through the Molt

Molting takes a toll on your flock. Feathers are over 85% protein, so birds need extra nutritional support during this time. Here’s how you can help:

  • Switch to a higher-protein feed: A ration like Nutrena NatureWise Feather Fixer 20% Protein Feed is specially designed to support feather regrowth while still meeting overall flock nutrition needs.

  • Boost vitamins and minerals: Supplements with kelp, herbs, or probiotics can strengthen feathers and support immunity.

  • Reduce stress: Avoid adding new flock members, handle birds gently, and ensure housing is clean, dry, and draft-free.

A Seasonal Reset for Your Flock

While molting can be messy and stressful for both chickens and their keepers, it’s a natural reset that allows birds to replace worn feathers with strong, insulating plumage. With the right care and nutrition, your flock will emerge from molting healthier, more resilient, and ready for the season ahead.
