Harvest Update: Corn Nearly Wrapped Up Across MD and Southern PA

The 2025 harvest season is nearing the finish line for most Mid-Atlantic growers. As Ben Hushon shared on RFD-TV’s Market Day Report, corn harvest across Maryland and southern Pennsylvania is roughly 90% complete, with only a few late fields remaining.

Corn Harvest Nears Completion

This season’s wind events have been hard on local fields, and many farmers are racing the weather to bring in the last of their crop. “That corn is really struggling to stand,” Ben explained. “We had another full day of 40- to 50-mile-per-hour winds last week, so guys are doing the best they absolutely can.”

Despite those challenges, yield reports have remained respectable across much of the region. Fields that caught timely summer rains produced above-average corn, while drier pockets and compacted soils limited potential in certain areas.

Double-Crop Soybeans Winding Down

Double-crop soybeans, planted in early July following wheat harvest, are also nearing completion. Harvest has progressed steadily thanks to favorable fall weather, though yields have been mixed. Later-planted beans struggled to fill out under shorter daylight and a few early frost events, but earlier stands have shown solid performance.

Post-Harvest Fieldwork and Cover Crops

As combines wrap up, attention is turning to post-harvest residue management and cover crop establishment. Growers are taking advantage of the mild conditions to get cereal rye, triticale, and other cover crops seeded ahead of colder weather. These practices not only protect soil structure but also improve nitrogen retention for spring crops.

The Mill’s Agronomy team continues to emphasize Decision Ag Solutions for evaluating yield maps, nitrogen efficiency, and variable rate strategies ahead of next year’s planting season. Using real-time data and local expertise helps growers make the most of every acre and input dollar.

Looking Ahead

With harvest nearly complete, now is the ideal time to plan for 2026 fertility programs and review soil sampling results. The Mill’s Certified Crop Advisors are available to help interpret data, update nutrient management plans, and schedule lime or fertilizer applications before winter.
