Equine & Animal Nutrition

Managing the nutrition and health of horses and livestock can be daunting without a clear plan. Without proper nutrition, your animals can experience issues such as weight loss, poor coat condition, and decreased energy levels. Additionally, managing horses with metabolic conditions can be challenging without specific dietary management. For livestock owners, achieving optimal growth, reproductive performance, and disease resistance can be difficult without a tailored nutrition and management program.

Without a proper plan in place, owners may struggle to meet their animals' needs, leading to frustration and potential health issues. Parasite control is also a concern, as parasites are becoming resistant to current deworming products, making it crucial to implement effective strategies.

The Mill's equine and livestock specialists offer farm visits to assess body condition, evaluate feeding programs, and develop custom nutritional plans tailored to each horse's needs. They also provide hay testing services, including a complimentary hay test in the fall, ensuring your animals receive the necessary nutrients. For parasite control, regular fecal egg counts in horses and tailored deworming programs are recommended. For livestock owners, The Mill offers customized nutrition and management programs for cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and other species. Their experienced specialists provide phone or on-farm visits, evaluation of feeding programs, and personalized recommendations to help meet operation goals. Additionally, The Mill carries a wide selection of high-quality feeds and supplements to maintain livestock health and maximize feeding program efficiency. Reach out to The Mill today to schedule a farm visit and start them on the path to peak performance. Let's work together to ensure your animals are healthy, happy, and thriving!

Michelle Jennings

Equine Specialist

Hey there! I am Michelle Jennings, Equine Nutritionist and Director of Equine Nutrition and Sales here at The Mill. I have spent my entire career helping to find solutions for horses battling against nutrition related issues. This passion stemmed from the extensive research and years of dealing with horses of my own with digestive problems. Realizing as a young adult how intrigued I was by the science of it all, I obtained my degree in Equine Science with an emphasis in Equine Nutrition from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. Since graduating in
1995, I have worked extensively with several widely respected Equine Nutritionists and Equine Feed Companies; namely Pennfield, Kentucky Equine Research and McCauley Brothers before landing at The Mill, fulltime, in 2007. Today, my husband, J.B. and I reside here in Harford County along with our two children, J.W. and Kate. They keep my non-working hours packed full of horses, hockey and lacrosse. I am committed to staying abreast of today’s latest research and products to offer our customers the most recent and updated advice on the market.

I was raised on a small farm in the Midwest. Horses and dogs have always been a huge part of my life. Thus, lending to my pursuit of two degrees in Equine Riding and Training from Northwest College in Powell, WY and Animal Science with a specialization in Equine Science from Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. I also worked for the Wyoming Fish and Wildlife Service tracking wolves after the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park. Since graduating in 2004, I have worked as a Hospital Manager at one of the top 10 Equine Hospitals in the country in Oconomowoc, WI (Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital); been a Ranch-Hand on a large cow/calf and performance horse operation in northern Montana (Cowan Select Performance Horses); a Stallion Manager for a large Quarter Horse Ranch in Guthrie, Texas (6666’s Ranch); and Barn Manager/Assistant Trainer at Fair Hill Training Center in

Charlie Brown

Equine Specialist

I’ve proudly been part of The Mill’s Equine Sales Team since 2013, serving as a Racetrack Specialist with a focus on equine nutrition and performance. As a third-generation Thoroughbred racehorse trainer in the Mid-Atlantic region, I bring decades of hands-on experience in racing and horse management to support our clients and their horses at every level of competition.

My career has been dedicated to helping fuel the equine athlete, whether on the track or in training, by aligning nutrition strategies with the specific needs of each horse. I work closely with trainers, owners, and barn managers to provide practical, results-based solutions backed by industry knowledge and a deep respect for the sport.

My wife and I reside in Cecil County, Maryland, and although we recently retired from farm ownership, our love for horses and the racing community remains strong. We have two children, a grown son who owns and operates his own business in the horse industry, and a daughter currently pursuing a career in anesthesiology. Our two dogs keep us company and grounded at home.

My lifelong involvement in the Thoroughbred racing industry, both professionally and personally, keeps me deeply connected to the track and the equine world, and I’m proud to share that experience with our customers here at The Mill.

Karen Holloway

Livestock Specialist

As Sales and Product Manager for The Mill’s Show Feeds, Livestock, and Poultry division, I work closely with customers and our retail team to ensure we deliver the right products and support, all with a focus on providing the best possible customer experience. Whether it’s helping a show family fine-tune their feeding program or supporting commercial and hobby farmers with feed, fencing, and livestock equipment, I’m passionate about connecting people with the tools they need to succeed.

I was raised on my family’s livestock, grain, and hay farm in Darlington, Maryland, where my love for agriculture, especially the animal side, took root early. That passion led me to earn animal science degrees from Virginia Tech and the University of Georgia, and to serve as an Agricultural Extension Agent in both Maryland and Virginia before joining The Mill.

In addition to my role here, I’m actively involved in supporting youth and agriculture through volunteer work. I serve as a long-time 4-H volunteer in Harford County and with the Maryland 4-H livestock programs, and I’m proud to serve on the Maryland State Fair Board, where I act as 4-H Beef Superintendent and Chair of the Agriculture Committee.

When I’m not at The Mill or involved in community events, I enjoy time at home on the family farm, relaxing with friends and family, hanging out with my dog, or unwinding with a good book or some music.
