Weight & Body Condition Scoring

Accurate and regular weight tracking is an important aspect to equine management. Our equine experts are available to come to your farm or facility with a portable scale to provide a baseline weight and regular weight monitoring, as well as body condition scoring (BCS), to help you maintain optimal health and nutrition as part of your herd management practices.

Hay Testing

To maintain a happy horse with a healthy gut, the average horse must consume 1.5-3% of its body weight in forage a day.  Thus, the foundation to any equine diet starts with a quality forage program.  Whether you grow your own hay or purchase elsewhere, it is crucial to know the details of that foundation in order to develop the appropriate feed program to fit the needs of your horse(s). The Mill recognizes and encourages the vital importance of this information and offers 2 different testing options.

Complimentary Hay Testing: This service is offered during select dates in the fall and provides you a broad overview of the hay to give a baseline in balancing your horse’s diet. It includes an average in:

• Crude Protein

• ADF/Digestibility

• NDF/Consumability

• Digestible Energy

Lab Analyzed Hay Testing: This service is offered year-round starting at $30 and provides a detailed analysis of the hay for more fine tuned and specific diet balancing. This option is highly recommended when managing horses with metabolic conditions.  It includes:

• Crude Protein

• ADF/Digestibility

• NDF/Consumability

• Digestible Energy

• Complete breakdown of the Micronutrients

• Nonstructural Carbohydrates (Sugars and Starches)

Fecal Egg Counting

Parasite management is an essential practice to help overcome and prevent parasite-related health issues that can present as weight loss, dull coat, lethargy, colic and ulcer-like symptoms. Regardless of how stellar your feed program is, if the parasite load in your horse goes unmanaged, the benefits of your feed program can be severely diminished; not to mention the severe medical complications that can arise from a nonexistent or ineffective parasite treatment plan. To help our customers recognize their horse’s parasite load and to choose the best wormer option and schedule for optimum results, The Mill has partnered with Lee Swift at Chestnut Springs Farm Equine Services for Fecal Egg Counting. The Mill highlights this service every Spring and Fall for good management practices and prevention, but it is also available year-round.

Pasture Management

The experienced consultants at The Mill can advise you regarding all aspects of your pasture management and forage programs. These services include recommendations on species and variety selection, establishment, forage stand maintenance and grazing and harvest management. We can collect hay and pasture samples and send them to certified labs for forage quality analysis. The results will then be used by our expert staff to design a total nutrition program to optimize animal performance and development.
