Lionhead rabbits are a small breed rabbit, but are not considered a dwarf rabbit, with compact bodies, short ears, and small heads. They average around 3lbs as adults and can live 7-10 years.

They come in a variety of colors, and soft fur throughout but have longer hair on their necks which forms their classic “mane,” and this mane can also extend down their sides and haunches in rabbits that are double maned. This mane is a dominant gene, meaning if a lionhead rabbit produces kits with a rabbit of a different breed, the mane will still be present.

These rabbits are good family rabbits as they have pleasant and curious personalities, and they enjoy interacting with their humans. They are easily frightened though like most other small rabbits. Thanks to their thick fur, particularly their manes, these rabbits need to be groomed regularly throughout the week to ensure their fur doesn’t form mats or collect debris. This is also a relatively new breed of rabbit, as they were recognized by the United Kingdom as an official breed of rabbit in 2002, and by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in 2014.
